1% Better everyday

Are you struggling with weight loss?  Could your diet be healthier? Would you like to improve your relationship with your partner? Or would you like a career change? If so then what you need to do is focus on getting 1% better every day in whatever it is you’re trying.

Better-than-YesterdayLife is a rollercoaster with lots of ups and downs so don’t kick yourself when you’re down. If you already have a goal but you are not reaching it as fast as you’d like to, then you need to stop and think why. One thing to remember, it’s never too late to start over.

When I wake up I think, how can I be a little better today? Just a tiny bit. If you weren’t happy with yesterday then ask yourself why not.  From now on ask yourself this question every single day: What’s one small thing I can start doing that would improve my life?

Every day is a new day.  Ask yourself what is the most important thing ahead of you each day and focus on that one thing.  Make it matter and make it count. Some days you might not gain 1%.  That is ok but once you see the reason why and know what change to make, then tomorrow will be a better day. Forget about yesterday and concentrate on today. A group of my friends use the saying “hop back on the wagon” and this is exactly what I do time and time again.

Remember Rome wasn’t built in a day.  With time, patience and change your goal is possible and you need to remind yourself of this every day.

The key is to start small. Like really small.

So what is it you would like to introduce in your life?

Would you like to exercise more? If it is an exercise habit you want to introduce then do something that you enjoy doing. Couch to 5KM is great for beginners.  Just download the app and get going.  Maybe you want to be able to do the plank for 60 seconds or 20 push-ups.  Then start each day with the plank for 10 seconds or 1 push up every morning. The next morning, add 5 more seconds to the plank and another push up. In two months, you’ll be doing 60 seconds of the plank and possibly 60 push-ups (ok maybe 20 push ups – which would be AMAZING).plank

When I started running a few years ago I could barely run to save my life. I started out running on country roads where nobody could see me and would stop at the sound of a car because I didn’t want anybody to think I was mad. I would run between lamp posts then walk to the next lamp post and then run to the next one. I would come home exhausted after 20 minutes running and walking. If I’m honest I was walking a lot more than I was running. Over time I went on to run the Dublin City Marathon. This transition was over a long period of time at a slow and steady pace. So believe me, if I can get up of my bum so can you.

Would you like to lose weight?.  If you want to lose weight then one tiny change every day can really make a difference. One very simple thing is cut out one sugary drink a day. Or cut your usual afternoon snack in half. Then by the end of week one you will realise that you don’t need sugary drinks at all and the afternoon snack you were so fond of is now a handful of nuts instead of two or three chocolate biscuits. weighing scalesThis is something I fought long and hard. I am now almost 6stone lighter than my heaviest weight. This did not happen overnight and was a long and hard process with many times putting on weight instead of losing weight but I kept working at it and I believe that if you want something badly enough then you can achieve it.

Would you like to strengthen your relationship with your partner?   In our busy lives it can be hard to make time for the person we love the most. Just by doing something small every day can make a big difference. Something like a simple hug first thing in the morning. Say I LOVE YOU out of the blue. Leave a little note for them if you won’t be home to let them know you were thinking of them. If you have small children make a special effort to cook dinner once a week while your partner gets them to bed. Make a date night once a month and go to the cinema. (Tuesdays and Wednesdays are cheap nights so no excuses). One thing I was told is never go to bed on an argument and these words of wisdom are amazing.  love

For those of you who are single, go out and have some fun. Get a couple of friends to come with you and try to meet some new people. Some of that confidence, experience in sparking up conversation with strangers and positive body language might come in handy. Good luck.

So here are my top 5 simple tips on how to get better each and every day:

  1. Do not rest on past successes- Just because you did a 5Km doesn’t mean you have to stop and get lazy again.
  2. No Excuses – Once you commit to change, stick to it. Woody Allen said: “85% of the secret of success is just turning up.” So if you plan to attend then turn up – no excuses.
  3. Ask Questions – We learn so much from others so don’t be afraid to ask questions. If there is somebody that you admire ask them how they reached their goals. Little words of wisdom and tips can really help others and people are always happy to help.
  4. Make the effort – If you decide to make that phone call, make that phone call. If you want to read that book, read that book. If you want to do that training session, do that training. You will look back on the day and be glad you made the effort.
  5. Prioritise – Remember we are all human and as much as we would like to think we can do everything at once we cant. Don’t have too many goals. Prioritise what you want the most.

So ask yourself where do you see yourself 5 years from now? Fitter, Thinner, Richer, Happier? Remember Slow and steady wins the race. At one point you’ll look back and be amazed at how big of an impact these 1% improvements have made. Remember change is possible as the saying goes with small strokes, you shall surely fell great oaks.
